The Ideal Sitter for this Job
Do you jump right in to get things done? When you work with school aged kids, do you have an arsenal of tools up your sleeve to keep the daily schedule flowing (brushing teeth, brushing hair, getting dressed, etc)? Are you great at creating boundaries and establishing structure in a way that is non-authoritarian but firm and grounded? But at the same time, know how to have fun and play! Are you excited to hop into a position that is 50% child care and 50% household management? You've come to the right place! Mom is looking for a person who possesses an innate understanding of what children need. You're calm and confident! Authoritative personalities won’t do well here. This kiddo is very smart and will push back. This doesn’t mean not having boundaries - in fact, you MUST have boundaries with her, but you're the person who sees the value in explaining things rather than approaching situations with "because I said so". Mom also values open communication. She loves to do check-ins every Friday and that can be the space where you chat about how it's going and ask questions. Experience wise, Mom is looking for a person who has spent two years or more in a substantive position previously, either as a Nanny or Family Assistant and she's also looking for experience with this age group. Experience with food allergies would be amazing but it's certainly not required. Mostly, they need you to take her allergies seriously and that's it! They'll train you on the rest.
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. They are happy to guarantee 50 hours/week!
About the Children
Girl, 7: She's an extremely active child. She’s very sweet! She just received the kindness award at school. She’s super fair. She doesn’t use her voice at school but at home, she has a very big voice! She can be very sassy! The more you push, the more she’ll push back. She and Mom have quiet time every night and they chat about things that happened during the day and why. Mom is dedicated to raising an emotionally intelligent child and part of this is allowing her to have a voice, which some people don’t understand, but they would love for you to be on board with. Mom comes from a male dominated industry and feels that giving her this voice and comfortability to express herself is important! It’s not all about “being nice”. She loves to bond with the people she’s with. Keep her safe but have fun with her, play with her! She does love school and she loves to write. **She has a lot of food allergies** She’s also allergic to dogs. For food, she's allergic to sesame, mustard, tree nut, coconut, and chickpeas. The general rule is that if it's in the house, it’s safe. Because of this, you will not be able to bring food in the house and therefore, but you're also welcome to eat whatever is there. This is really, really important. Mom also doesn’t want to embarrass her in public and draw attention to her allergies all the time. They will train you on using an EpiPen, so no experience is necessary. They'll also train you on how the allergies present for her and what to look for. To be clear, you might even need to have your cosmetics checked by Mom - there is almond oil, coconut, etc. in a lot of body lotion and other cosmetics for example.
Responsibilities
You will help the girl get ready for school, assisting with breakfast and getting dressed. Then you would take her to school and come back home for six hours, helping with organizing projects, tidying up generally, doing some meal prep and other household management errands. Most tasks would be related to the girl, and they have a housekeeper so there is not major cleaning other than the dishwasher and that kind of thing. At 2 P.M., you'll pick her up from school, take her to various activities and playdates, and help keep her on schedule. Then it's back home for dinner! It's a long day but it's a fun and varied one!
Additional Information
Please make sure you're comfortable managing the girl's allergies and feel comfortable taking that very seriously. They're looking for a fully vaccinated and boosted nanny and are likewise vaccinated and boosted.
